About Us

Çatma Mescit Hammam

The story of Çatma Mescit Hammam is said to be as follows; “In 1533, the greatest architect in Ottoman history, Mimar Sinan, had built the “Grand Hammam” and the “Kasımpasha Mosque Camii-i Kebir” in the honour of the Vizier Kasim Pasha. The significant Statesmen and Pashas of the period, did not want to share the Grand hammam with the public/working class, upon this, Mimar Sinan designed the
“Çatma Mescit Hammam” for the utilisation of the public and for the labourers who were making their living on the docks along the Golden Horn.

Frequently
Asked Questions

Here are some answers to the most frequently asked questions we’ve received from our guests.

You will wear a special hammam towel called peştemal, made of organic cotton or linen. It’s a tradition coming from the Ottoman Empire to the modern days.

The temperature in a hammam varies between 25 and 50 Celsius degrees. Whenever you feel too hot, you may move to a colder room to chill.

Our massage therapists are from the Far East, mostly from Thailand. Traditional hammam full-body scrub and foam wash are performed by Turkish bath attendants called “tellak”.

Most of the hammams are not mixed, so you can join a male or female section of a Turkish bath. However, you may book a private event in our hammam and invite both male and female guests.

Massage therapy is well-known in many cultures. It can improve blood circulation, relax muscles, and decrease joint inflammation.
